Pilates vs. Lagree
Same idea, a spring-loaded sliding carriage. Very different class. Here's how to choose.
The short answer
Pilates reformer uses spring resistance on a sliding carriage to build core strength, control and alignment at a measured pace. Lagree uses a Megaformer the same way but keeps your muscles under constant tension with slow, controlled movement. It's low-impact like Pilates, but the effort is much higher, blending strength and cardio in one class.
| Aspect | Pilates Reformer | Lagree |
|---|---|---|
| Machine | Reformer: springs under a sliding carriage | Megaformer: springs under a sliding carriage, built for continuous tension |
| Pace | Measured, with a reset between exercises | Slow and continuous, with minimal rest |
| Focus | Core strength, control, alignment | Strength and cardio together; endurance |
| Impact | Low | Low |
| Effort | Moderate, and scalable | High. Expect to shake. |
| Good first class | Pilates Reformer Level 1 | Lagree Level 1 |
Pilates or Lagree?
What's the difference between Pilates and Lagree?
Pilates reformer uses spring resistance on a sliding carriage to build core strength, control and alignment at a measured pace. Lagree uses a Megaformer the same way but keeps your muscles under constant tension with slow, controlled movement. It's low-impact like Pilates, but the effort is much higher, blending strength and cardio in one class.
Is Lagree harder than Pilates?
Usually, yes. Both are low-impact, but Lagree keeps your muscles under constant tension with minimal rest, so the effort is much higher. Pilates moves at a more measured pace with a focus on control and alignment.
Which should I try first?
Either works. If you want to learn control and alignment first, start with Pilates Reformer Level 1. If you want a strength-and-cardio challenge, start with Lagree Level 1. Both keep you grounded with no standing on the carriage.
Can I do both?
Yes. That's why we built both rooms. Our all-access membership covers the Lagree room, the Pilates reformer room and the yoga room.
Do I need grip socks for both?
Yes. Grip socks are required for reformer Pilates and Lagree.
